I only recently began to play Hold'em. My dad taught me to play 5 Card Draw when I was a kid, but I never played a lot or got very good. Then a little while ago I discovered Hold'em, decided to try it out, and loved it. I primarily play online, and in honesty will probably do more of that than table poker for quite a while. I've been looking for a good book, wanting to make a proper purchase to get better at the game. I don't necessarily want a book that's only for online poker, but I want one that's at least online poker friendly, or applicable in online poker. Most of the books I've ran across that are just for online poker have horrible reviews, anyway.

I was thinking of The Theory of Poker, as I've heard such wonderful things about it, and I will own it eventually, but are there any other books, or similar books, that you guys could recommend?

I'm just here for some advice firstly. Is this the best way to learn how to play poker? I mean start off with Free Poker sites that I don't have to bet real money and learn to read the cards and play properly?

Please any advice would be very grateful.

I'll be heading to the casino to play some nl cash games for the first time next week. I mostly play online sngs/tournaments and as far cash games online, I've played up to $.10/.25nl. I'll be playing $1/$2 at the casino and I wanted to know in general how the play stacks up at a live casino.

What are the odds when your holding KK, and you have 2 callers, and one is holding AK, and the outer one is holding 10K.. What were the odds of them, holding your two outs?
I only ask coz it happened last night....

There are tons of posts regarding bankroll management requirements to move up in levels.

How about skills required to move up in levels? Let's say for argument's sake that 25NL and below is largely about ABC poker. You're bankrolled now for a shot at 50NL - what skills should you have to take that shot, or should be developing as you take that shot? Now you're bankrolled for 100NL - what skills should you have/be developing to take that shot? Etc.

What I have in mind is sort of a "course syllabus" to move up the ranks from microstakes to small stakes (200NL).

There are probably posts that do this already - please let me know where to find them if I missed them.

Ok so my rakeback site is having a ladder competition where the top 50 people in rakeback get bonuses based upon their mgr..., 1st is 700 bucks and down from there on....right now it looks like there are only 30 people on the list.....secondly 30th place has a negative mgr so it looks like they have been using up their ftp's and are going to still get 75 bucks for nothing....if i can get one cent of mgr ill win one hundred....is their any way anyone can ship me 22 cents so i can buy in at a .01/.02 nl table? I currently have 18 cents haha... I would do this myself, but im waiting on my rakeback to get deposited on the 15th....If this is against forum rules feel free to close this post mod.....

I have a tendency to overplay pocket pairs and it gets me in trouble. Do I just have to get disciplined in letting them go when there's an overcard on the board or try and keep the pot small? I'm dealt JJ's in the small blind. I raise 3xBB and I get 2 callers. I'm guessing I should have raised 4-5 times, because I get called by someone with Q9. The blinds were 400 and 800 with 100 antes. Board is, [Qh 8s 6h] one guy makes a continuation bet about of 3200. I call turn comes 9h. The guy on my right pushes all in, and I read it as a semi-bluff flush draw and call and what follows is my biggest suckout yet. He had two pair Q's and 9's, I hit a 10d on the river for a straight.

The main event starts today; players will certainly be posting updates on Twitter, etc.

So... let's keep all the thoughts in one thread for cleanliness/sanity. Who's going to win the ME? A pro? A Jerry Yang?

Just thought I would share a really good bonus I came across on bonuswhores. This is extremely quick, and those who multi-table, and even those who don’t could clear this bonus in very little time. If you’re outside the US, there is really no reason not to grind out some free money.

A couple I would like to see tried out is Hold Em with jokers which I think would be fun, and I'm surprised doesn't seem to be anywhere online.
Also Hold Em with infinite decks could be interesting so that any number of the same card could come out at once like on Blackjack.

Hello... i was looking into getting the 60 day trial of Poker Tracker... Does anyone know if you are allowed to use it on Full Tilt.. and also I know a lot of people say its not worth it at the lower levels... but is it a good easy to use program?

Hey guys, I'm in a 10+1 tourney on PS. I have played 25% of my hands thus far and have showed down all but two hands that were solid hands. I don't have HEM on this computer or else I would give you more stats on me and the others. But my question is this: they are folding to my raises almost automatically now. So, do I mix it up, or just keep on playing how I am playing. We are only to the 125/250 25 ante blind stage wiht hundreds before the money. TAG the way to go?

I've had constant connection problems since I signed up, and contacted support as I know I have a solid internet connection, I can't believe that for one they do not support windows vista, and that it isn't more widely stated on their site, it's only once I've been folded out of big hands where I was very likely to win, that I was riled enough to email them in the end, this is the transcript from support

The first e-mail I sent, contained my computer specs, including running vista, my anti-virus software etc. Stating that my connection is A+, I run full tilt, partypoker, and racing game GTR2 with no problems, 10k hands and a merry round from support later, it seems the software doesn't support Vista at all?? Support haven't even advised me to use the browser software, which I will I suppose, but I hardly imagine that's as smooth as the day is bright, multitabling will be 'fun' I'm sure :eek:
